BEACHES
LAKE.jpg (19417 bytes) The Lifeguard Department operates at two beaches on Lake Mission Viejo.  North Beach, which is located at the main entrance of the lake, and East Beach, which is located about one-half mile south of the main entrance.

North Beach is staffed by a lifeguard year-round when swimmers are present.  The hours of operation are from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on weekends and 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on weekdays (10:00 pm in winter). East Beach is closed from Labor Day to the middle of June, except weekends from Labor Day through September. The off season hours are from 10:00 a.m. to dusk.

During peak hours of operation, June 21 to Labor Day, the beach lifeguard patrol will have five to six lifeguards on duty. Each of the four lifeguard towers will have one lifeguard assigned to it, and one of the towers is on a floating platform in the water outside the swimming area.  At the waters edge there will be a minimum of one lifeguard roving the area. During high visitation there will be two roving lifeguards.

The lifeguard is scheduled to work an eight hour shift. During slow periods or unfavorable weather, the hours could be reduced. The lifeguard receives two breaks per shift. They also rotate from the lifeguard tower to the roving water edge station back to the lifeguard tower before they report to the lake patrol boat for a two hour assignment. This procedure is usually repeated twice each shift.

The lifeguard towers are equipped with a rescue buoy, paddle board, mask and snorkle, whistle, first aid kit, and a hat for head and shoulder protection. The tower has a telephone for communicating from tower to tower and from tower to the communication center located in the headquarters building.
